The new kind of journaling category

When asked for a fun fact about myself, I rarely need to think. I have my go-to fact. I’ve kept a daily journal since 2013. Over a decade without missing a single day. After more than a decade of doing this, I know the power of journaling.

When my daughter was born, I started a second journal. This time just for her. Little time capsules for her future self.

I discovered other parents doing similar things. Each for their own reasons in their own way. Some wanted their children to know how deeply they were loved. Some wanted to pass on self-knowledge. Others wanted to simply preserve memories before they slipped away. This practice could be just sentimental but it could also be profoundly valuable.

I found that there are no tools built for parents. Journaling apps focus on personal reflection. Baby tracking apps focused on feeding schedules and nappy counts. Photo apps were just a fancy storage. I wanted something different specifically for parents and be reliable on a decades-long stretch.

Some parents send emails to their future children. Some scribble notes in baby books. Some keep memories in a small family chat. Others have thousands of photos with no story connecting them. Chapter One brings all of this together into one reliable, secure, long-term home.

I want to help parents become journallers. If you've ever wanted to keep a journal for your child but couldn't build a habit or it simply took too much time and energy, Chapter One is for you.I'm planning to do this in three ways:

  1. The tool. Purpose-built for parents to capture memories quickly, focus on what will be valuable, and store it securely for the long term.

  2. The movement. Spreading awareness about parent journaling. Changing how people see parent journaling, the way meditation shifted from fringe to mainstream.

  3. The community. Building a support network of parents on the same journey.

It's not another baby photo app or milestone-tracking app; it's an entirely new category and a community around that.

I want to be honest with you from the start: I'm in the early stage now. But I'm building it differently. This isn't a venture-backed startup racing to become a billion-dollar enterprise or die trying. I'm building it at a slow pace to make it right. And I want to build it with parents, not just for them.

Join the waitlist and become a founding parent, part of a community documenting childhood in a way that will matter decades from now.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

How is it different from other apps?

Most journaling apps are built for personal reflection. They're centered around writing about your thoughts, moods, and habits. Chapter One is built specifically to document your child's life. It's centered around quickly capturing moments (using voice or text), guiding you on what to capture, and passing it to your child when they become adults.

How much will it cost?

Short answer: there will definitely be a free tier, but we haven't set the price for the paid tier yet. Long answer: we are holding off on pricing because we want to build with the founding group first and understand what feels fair. We want to make sure this doesn't feel like an app that locks you into a subscription you can't escape without losing access to your data. It needs to feel fair while also being enough for me to sustain this as a business.

What happens to my data?

Our vision is that this journal must outlive any single company or app. From day one, we're building the ability to export your complete journal. All text, photos, voice notes, everything – in standard formats you can keep forever. You'll never be locked in. As we grow, we'll explore additional safeguards like open-source options or data trusts.

Can I journal about multiple children?

We're still exploring this use case and how to design it so it doesn't feel like double the work while keeping each child's journal separate. If that's your situation, we'd love to hear about your needs – write to us at dear@chapteronejournal.app

When is the official launch?

We are hoping to launch the first version in the App Store this spring. We are working with a founding group of parents to shape the product together. Join the waitlist now for early access and a real voice in what we build. In 2026, this will be iOS only. Android, desktop, and web versions will come later.

What kind of content can I save?

Our vision here is that some constraints are good. Chapter One uses a simple format: one entry per day, each containing one photo or video and text. Text can be transcribed from your voice note or typed directly.
